Vienna Public Library
The Vienna Public Library, located on the south side of the courthouse square at 401 Popular Street, was constructed in 1911, and was one of the almost 3000 libraries funded by Andrew Carnegie across the United States. In addition to the library on the second floor, there is an excellent meeting room on the first floor which is used by many groups (including the Johnson County Genealogical & Historical Society) for meetings and programs.
Resources
The Vienna Public Library maintains a collection of genealogical and historical resources. These items are useful to researchers of local or family history. The library also maintains a collection of family histories compiled and donated by researchers. Genealogy materials are arranged into categories and further coded by content and topic for easy use. Nearby states and area counties are also included in the library collection. For a small library, they have a good genealogy and local history collection, and welcome all researchers.
The Vienna Times newspaper collection is available on microfilm from 1894 but cannot be printed due to printer issues. Future plans include digitizing this collection.
Computers are available to the public free of charge; however, there is a nominal fee for prints, copy and fax services. The library also has a nice collection of children's books featuring new books from a Pilcrow Foundation Grant, as well as many audio books on CD.
